We asked the brilliant DJ BobaFatt for a bespoke mix for Honest London and he replied with a culture-laden, memory bank-sound map of a mix, bringing a true flavour of the city that could only come from a Londoner.

I was born in Croydon, South London in the mid ‘70s. I spent my growing years in other places, but moved to North East London about a decade ago. Right now, I can’t imagine living anywhere else. London is dirty, smelly, noisy, expensive & over-crowded. But I love it. Properly love it. It’s never dull, it never sleeps, I love how multi-cultural the population is, and appreciate that you can choose to have a good ol’ knees up, or just mooch around its massive parks. You can get engulfed in culture of all forms & soak up its centuries of history.

I’ve worked in the music industry in some form for most of my adult life, and for the amount of sounds on offer, London really is one of the best places on the planet. This mix is a slightly schizophrenic, slightly scathing love letter to my hometown, as much as it’s an aural postcard for tourists. It covers the good, the bad & the ugly. Some of it’s pretty silly, some of it’s a bit scary, a lot of it is simply glorious and a little bit beautiful. I tried to include a little taste of all of it. These are all songs & clips about London. About the posh bits and the rough bits, about TV, about nostalgia, about raves, about cockneys, about royals, about history, about the tube, about home. It could’ve gone on a lot longer. I opted for a C90’s worth. I’m very proud to be a Londoner.

DJing for over 20 years, BobaFatt has become known for playing a mass of styles of music. In 2014 he appeared in a Fact Magazine Reader's Poll as one of 20 of the most underrated DJs. He was named BBC 1Xtra's 'M1X It Up' Champ by Mistajam in 2006, and featured in Mixcloud's Top 100 Cloudcasts of 2013. Every Sunday night, BobaFatt hosts 'The Sunday Scenario', a show on Itch FM (the UK's only dedicated Hip Hop station), playing underground & classic Hip Hop. He also DJs regularly on NTS Radio & Resonance FM, representing world famous record shop, Rough Trade. BobaFatt has also provided mixes for the legendary Solid Steel & killer cult record label Death Waltz, as well as session work for the likes of Roots Manuva's Banana Klan label, Soul II Soul's MC Chickaboo & for DJ Yoda's debut album. He has warmed up for Hip Hop legends like DJ Jazzy Jeff, KRS One, EPMD, The Pharcyde, Jay Electronica, Mos Def, Afrika Bambaataa, Ali Shaheed (Tribe Called Quest) to name a few. He was also in a Chemical Brothers music video with Noel Gallagher, taught the Mayor of Wimbledon how to scratch and had a cup of tea with Banksy; not on the same day obviously. One of the most diverse DJs in the game & always on the hunt for sonic weaponry.
